HomeMy WebLinkAbout21.06.14 - Minutes, Diversity & Inclusion D & I Meeting Minutes - June 14, 2021, 6:00 P.M. ATTENDEES: (Via Zoom) Arthur Hicks, Chairperson Zunny Materma, Vice-Chairperson Tiara Burnett, Committee Member The briefing/work session was begun with excitement about the future of D & I. It was reiterated that diversity is a goal of community representation. D & I is an advisory committee and cannot assist in civil rights matters. D & I Committee does not monitor or legislate individual matters or issues. An example was given of a Mennonite Church grievance letter regarding proposing that the City revoke the 501(3)(c) status of a public entity. Another example cited was the Bakke case regarding affirmative action related to college admission and minority set asides in Government contracts. The difference between diversity and civil rights must be clearly defined for all D & I Committee members. There is a casting call of new subcommittee members. The search continues for the two female individuals, one Hispanic, and one in the LGBT community, that expressed initial interest in D & I Committee membership, without providing personal contact identifiers. Tuesday, June 22, 2021: Washington County Commissioners meeting, 10:00 a.m., may be attended by Arthur Hicks. The specific time for the D & I agenda item is to be determined. The priorities for the current D & I committee are to develop an annual forecast and to recruit subcommittee members. The briefing/work session will be held on July 12, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. via Zoom.
