HomeMy WebLinkAbout23.06.14 - Minutes, Womens Commission Washington County Commission for Women
Minutes - June 14, 2023, 6 p.m.
Hagerstown Community College, BSH 150
Present: Laurie Chrzanowski, Beth Harvey, Mary Hendrickson, Amber Mowery, Dawn Nally, Nitzalis
Rivera, Danielle Sweeney, Elise Weber.
Not Present: Cherie McCord, Teresa Peek, Melissa Peters, Commissioner Randall Wagner
President Beth Harvey opened the meeting by requesting that all stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.
Minutes: The June minutes were approved. Elise made a motion to approve and Amber seconded.
Treasurer’s Report: Amber reported that there is a $7 balance for the fiscal year that is closing on June
30. It is fiscally responsible to expend the budget before the end of the fiscal year. The remaining dollars
will be used to purchase stamps and stationary for correspondence of the Commission.
CFW Roundtable: A last minute invitation was extended for Commission members to represent the
Washington County Commission for Women at a state meeting. Cheri, Elise, and Beth were able to
participate in at least a portion of the online meeting. Each represented commission was able to share a
challenge and a high spot. Frederick County’s commission shared that it sponsors “She Leads” podcasts
featuring high school students on topics of interest to high school peers. The idea may be suitable for
one of our committees to discuss and consider implementing. A discussion also occurred about
Baltimore City Commission’s work with training hospitality workers to be aware of the signs of human
trafficking. This topic is of interest to some of our committees as well. The W’s (Washington County)
reported at the end of the meeting so Elise was disappointed that only limited attention was given to
our Commission’s report.
Brooke’s House Financial Literacy program: August 7, 14, 21, & 28 3-4:30 p.m. Western MD
Consortium has indicated to Beth that can likely donate up to $5,000 to be earmarked for program
expenses. The program will be facilitated by Cortnie Beaver and Barbara Martin. Discussion touched on
the purposes of the funds, fund management, any possible expansion of the funds to support a similar
program at other non-profits, and the role of the Commission in such a project. Some members have
previously volunteered to assist with Brooke’s House program and may wish to continue. There is
support for continuing this program, which was originally sponsored by the WCCW, but continued
discussion is appropriate.
Community Foundation of Washington County, Ride Alongs: Stacey Crawford, President of the
Community Foundation of Washington County is holding ride alongs to non-profit agencies that were
given grant funds from the Foundation. Members of the Commission were invited to join. Beth will
report back interest to the Community Foundation and share details with the WCCW.
Citizen Comments from WCCW members: Mr. Wagner suggested that members attend the Washington
County Commission meetings on Tuesday mornings in order to provide citizen comments on the work of
the Washington County Commission for Women. Beth and Cheri attended a meeting to discuss
highlights of commission work, which was well received. The meetings are at 9 a.m. Tuesday mornings
with an 8:50 a.m. arrival time. Some talking points are provided to the members who attend and
represent the commission.
