RE: 16822 National Pike Hagerstown, MD & Rockland Estate Reclamation
Good afternoon, David,
Thank you for allowing me access to walk through and review materials for possible reclamation at 16822
National Pike in Hagerstown, MD. After reviewing the home and various outbuildings, we came to the
following conclusions based on the materials deemed historic compared to those that have been renovated
or replaced. Prior to those few bullet points on each of the locations, I wanted to quickly give you an
overview of the history at Rockland Estate — where we plan to use the reclaimed pieces from Dickinson
Farm.
Rockland Estate is a 30 -acre farm located off Sharpsburg Pike in Washington County. The farm includes the
largest bank barn in Washington County, a 10,000 square foot estate house, and multiple outbuildings. Rich
in history, Rockland is available for inclusion on the registry of National Historic Places and is an official site
of the Underground Railroad. We recently met with and continue to trade emails with the Washington
County Tourism Board, with a planned roadside placard in honor of James W.C. Pennington. At the age of
19, Pennington escaped from slavery here at Rockland and went on to be the first African American student
admitted to Yale, later going on to be ordained as a minister. In his book, "The Fugitive Blacksmith",
Pennington writes of the cave in which he stored his clothing on the night he escaped — the same cave
we've spent countless hours tidying up the brush and growth around it. The history of Rockland runs deep —
down to the soldier's names written on the walls of our attic when the estate house once served as a war
hospital. A brief note on Rockland, as we think it is important there is an understanding that our focus on
keeping the history and materials from one farm in Washington County, to another is our goal. We plan to
use stone and wood mainly from the Dickinson site as we continue to develop and Rockland.
Main House - Most of the original flooring has been replaced or upgraded, along with casework and trim
around doors and windows. Updates occur fairly recent, dating back roughly 30 years or less. Because of
this, there is little historical value in reclaiming much of the materials in the home. There are roughly four
original doors in the house that could be of use, coupled with what would likely pan out as 200-300 sq ft of
flooring. There are some usable beams in the basement (1s1 floor sub floor) but most have been cut to make
way for new electrical/utilities tied to renovations, or have powder post damage making them unusable. The
stonework is about the only thing on the main house I would really be interested in.
Spring House - The spring house has been cladded in vinyl siding and the interior appears to be constructed
sometime in the 1930's or 40's with some other upgrades made through -out the house in the 80's and 90's.
Sadly, again, not much here. We would love the opportunity to reclaim the stove out of the lower level of this
building within the hearth.
Bank Barn - The bank barn has been upgraded and cladded with ribbed sheet metal sometime in the last 3-
5 years max. Exterior and roofing appears new. With the number of screws holding the metal in place, much
of the original wood siding is not re -usable. The original beams and framework of the barn appear to be in

good condition and are salvageable. The flooring is questionable, but some could possibly be saved. We
would be most interested in reclaiming the wood, beams, and segment of flooring from the barn for use in
our historic location.
Again, thank you for taking the time. The limited number of items we may have the opportunity to reclaim
and put to good use sharing the historical value here at Ninety Thirty at Rockland Estate would be
wonderful.
