The tower is planned to be 195 feet in height with a four -foot lightning rod. LT will be complying with all local zoning and permitting processes required for construction. The house is situated on low lying ground near a small brook and faces northeast, toward the road.On the opposite side of Fairview Road, north of the house is a large brick bank barn. The house is a two story, six bay brick dwelling resting on low fieldstone foundations. Most notable about its facade is the recessed double porch which appears to be centered in the wal and which is included under the main roof span. This gives the front elevation a very sym- metrical appearance. The 'entire building has been painted white. Flemish bond brick work ha been employed at the front elevation while American or common bonding is used at the other walls. Flat arches of brick' are present above most window and door openings. Windows and doors appear to have been placed symmetrically in the front elevation. Windows have narrow casings with a large bead at the inside edge and hold six over six pane double hung sashes. The windows are flanked with pairs of shutters with movable louvers. The main entrance is located in the third bay from the east corner of the front elevation. e pdoor is located above it at the second story porrtted by chamfered square levelporch. double posts between which runs abalustradewith diagonal and vertic balusters forming a lattice work pattern. At the first story level, the porch has been P^ - closed with modern jalousie windows. The roof of the house is sheathed with sheet metal and extends beyond the end walls. The eaves, barge areas and returns are trimmed with massive scroll brackets, more elaborate than most to be found on Washington County's rural houses. The brackets are mounted on a wide frieze. Brick chimneys with several courses of corbeling at their tops are located inside the end walls. Another chimney extends from the center of the house. A cemetery is located on a hill behind the barn. It is a Kreigh family grave yard where early owners of this property lie buried. The buildings on the 23.14 acre property appear to be in excellent condition. The house has several notable fea- tures, such as its inset double porch centered in the front elevation and elaborate scroll brackets along the eaves and barge areas. The barn is a good example of such a structure also probably dating from the mid 19th century as do most brick end barns in Washington Count ig al Houses with recessed double porches along part of the front elevation are a prominent archi- tectural type--in-Washington County and the lower Cumberland Valley, most dated examples havin been built between 1840 and 1865. The majority of houses following this plan have the double porch at one end of the front wall. This house is unusual with its porch centered in the front wall. Thus, this house is much more symmetrical at the front elevation than most dwel- 3 lings with recessed double porches. The house and barn were presumably built by the Firey (also spelled Fiery) family, John Firey having acquired the_farm from Jacob Moats on April 21, 1851... In 1881, Frisby Spickler bought the farm from Mary Fiery (82/100). It was then in the Ankeney family until 1915 when it was again in the Fiery. family ,.(147/713,-113/662, 113/661). These three -families have held prop- erty in the area during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The farm is part of a land grant called "Kreigh's Establishment." The Kreigh family cemetery is located on a hill behind the barn. Although it was once on the same property as the house and barn, the present acreage does not include the grave yard. It is situated on high ground and faces south, overlooking the village of Fairview, The structure is a large two story, three bay stone dwelling, three bays wide with a two stor three bay wing also three bays wide, extending to the rear or north. The house has been ex- tensively remodeled at the exterior and interior. The exterior walls are constructed of roughly coursed local limestones and display modern raised pointing. Some windows are topped with rough keystones flanked by larger flattened stones. Windows and doors appear to be aligned with each other in the walls with first story windows in the south and east elevations appearing larger than those at the second story level. All windows have wide frames with mitered corner joints finished with a bead at the inside edge. Modern six over six pane sashes are replacements. The main entrance is located in the center bay of the front elevation. The door is trimmed similarly to the windows and is hung beneath a four light transom. The entrance bay is shel- tered by a modern flat roofed porch with a balustrade around the top. Another major entranc. is located in the east elevation of the wing in the first bay north of the front sectio:( This entrance is elaborate, having a wide transom and side lights. It has a porch like tat used at the front elevation. The roof structure is new and is sheathed with modern asphalt shingles. Brick chimneys with corbels at their tops are located inside the end walls. A pair of chimneys e::tendsfron the north end wall of the ell. The house appears to be in excellent condition and stands on a tract containing 1.91 acres. According to local tradition it served for many years as an inn or tavern. Although the house has been com-pletely renovated, it does appear to retain its original form. Local historians and family traditions indicate that this building served as a tavern or "stage coach stop" during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Although no documented evidence could be found to substantia this story, the large size of the building and its relationship to the roadway could suggest such a use. 1- =e The house was in the Fiery (also spelled Fiery) family through the second half of the 19th century and the 20th century until 1967 (73/622, 84/356, 114/40, 125/507, 259/63, 450/665). In an equity case dating from 1875, this property was described as having a large two story stone house and frame stabling for 10-12 head of stock, a stone spring house, two wells and a young orchard. It then contained 145 acres. The farm included parts of the land grants 1h "i;reigh's Establishment," "Resurvey on Three Friends" and "Three Cousins." It was presumabl o'-med by the Ereigh family through the early 19th century. The exterior appearance of the house would suggest a building date during the early 19th century. Most of them are located along its West side. Nestled among the houses, is a one story, three bay frame building. Appearing to date from the turn of the century it served as s'store and gas station. A Flying -A gas pump'of the type used during the ,late -.1940's and early 1950's stands in front of the building._.The storf is sheathed with German aiding and is situated with its gable end facing the 'road ` Its.,win- dows are covered with pairs of four panel shutters. Other structures in the village are of wood construction, apparently frame. Most of the houses have small barns and outbuildings at the back of their lots. Buildings in the village appear to be in good condition. Consisting of approximately eight primary structures apparently dating from the late 19th century, Fairview is representative of a number of tiny communities which dot Washington County. Fairview was presumably settled by the Kreigh, Fiery and Spickll families during the 19th century. Part of the land on which the village is situated was a land grant called "Kreigh's Establishment." The Kreigh family cemetery is located on a hill just south of the village and members of the Fiery and Spickler families still own land near Fairview. r. It is situated on an area of level ground and faces nortl east. The structure is a two story, three bay log dwelling sheathed with German siding. A one stor; eli extends to the rear. The building rests on low fieldstone foundations. Windows and doors appear..to be spaced evenly in the front elevation. All windows observed at the main stories hatsix six pane double hung sashes trimmed with architraves with pointed top pieces. Hinge pins indicate that shutters were present at one time. Doors are located in the first and second bays from the east corner of the front elevation. The center entrance is topped with a transom. Above the other door are marks in the siding suggesting that the height of the opening has been altered. Other entrances are located in the southeast elevation of the ell which is protected by a deep overhanging porch. A one story hipped roof porch extends across the front elevation, it is supported by pairs of turn posts,• between which runs a balustrade with vertical and diagonal balusters. The roof of the main section is sheathed with corrugated sheet metal and extends beyond end walls of the house. A standing seam tin roof is present on the back section. Brick chim neys are located inside each gable end, the larger being at the northwest elevation. An ex- terior stone and brick flue is attached to the ell. Plain boxing finishes the eaves. The house appears to be in fair to good condition and stands on a tract containing 82.59 acre where a tannery once operated. Like many such dwellings its log construction has been sheathed with German siding. The house also was once part of a complex which included a tannery business. For much of the 19th century this property was owned by the Fiery (also spelled Firey) family 'roal who apparently operated the tannery. They owned a large amount of land in the vicinity of present day Fairview and still retain several farms in the area. in an equity court case (13/305) this particular tract was described as having been improved with two comfortable two story log houses, a stable, tannery and bark house. The exact lo- cation of the other structures is not known at present. The land is part of "Kreigh's Establishment" a land grant to the Kreigh family who held this ,rea, property until the early 19th century. In 1873 the property was conveyed by Joseph Middle- kauff and Joseph Fiery, trustees to David C. Herbert (WMcKK5/632); It remained in the Herber family until it was purchased by the present owner in 1927. Facing east, toward the road and the creek, the complex consists of a double kiln to the south which is a frame structure also built into the bank. Fa bi.. Apparently the front .portion of the kiln has fallen away into a pile of stone rubble lying in front of the ruins. Remaining portiods-'o_t•:the outer walls of the kiln-;are,to be%seen toward the side and rear of the complex, The inner chambers of the kiln have been• exposed, revealin, cylindrical stacks of$rick,"6io courses in thickness. Both the inner and outer' surfaces of the chamber display header bricks. Part of the lime kiln complex is an adjoining frame structure resting on stone foundations. Tall, narrow and partially resting on wooden piers the timber frame building houses part of the lime burning process. Just north of the complex is evidence of a roadway which angled up the bank to reach the upper level of the complex. Because portions of the kiln have fallen away, its inner construction can be observed easily. There E were many lime kilns in Washington County where limestone is abundant. Lime kilns. produced lime used as a flux in iron making and for agricultural purposes. There is.no'record of they/ having been an iron furnace near this kiln so it appears to have been used to produce agricul- tural lime. It is located along the Conococheague Creek northwest of Hagerstown.
