Rodney Little State Historic Preservation Officer Maryland Historical Trust 100 Community Place Crownsville MD 21032-2023 Notification of No Effect Determination (under the Programmatic Agreement for Minor Projects) Project: US 522 over I-70 EB and Ramp "A" Funding Source: State Project Number: 2380221-B09000 Description: The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is proposing bridge remedial work to Structure No. 2109000 in Washington County. The proposed work for this project involves plating beam ends, installing drainage troughs over piers, modify oadway joints at piers repair roadway joint headers with concrete, perform pneumatically applied mortar repairs to piers, and reseal abutment roadway joints with pourable sealant All work will be within SHA right-of-way. County: Washington 7.5' Topographic Map Name: Hancock (WV) Project Type: 1 Actions Taken: The Area of Potential Effects (APE) is limited to the areas of direct construction impacts, including Bridge No. 2109000 and any temporary staging areas. Due to the nature of the proposed work, a larger APE for visual impacts is not needed. SHA Architectural Historian Rebecca Crew consulted the SHA-GIS Cultural Resources Database, the Office of Bridge Development Bridge Inventory, Exemption Regarding Historic Preservation Review Process for Effects to the Interstate Highway System, photographs and other information to determine impacts to historic standing structures. Bridge No. 2109000 is a three -span steel beam bridge of a total of 202 feet in length. Built in 1965, it is not yet forty-five years of age. As part of the Interstate System, the bridge is exempted as a historic resource. SHA Archeologist April Fehr assessed the archeological potential of the APE based on review of the SHA-GIS Cultural Resources Database, site file data, and photographs No archeological investigation has included the APE and no sites are recorded there. Since the work is confined to the structure and improved SHA right-of-way, it is unlikely that significant archeological resources will be impacted. No additional investigation is recommended.
